BREAK THE SILENCE     STATISTICS     THE CAMPAIGN     SAFETY PLANNING

THIS IS A PREVENTION CAMPAIGN. Our goal is to provide people with safe, simple, and effective things that anyone can do to help people being abused. Our goal is to create a community of people who are no longer willing to stay silent when someone is being hurt by his or her partner.

THIS CAMPAIGN TARGETS THE COMMUNITY. Our primary targets are friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, clergy, and other community members who may someday be in a position to help victims. Our goal is to create a community which will join us in speaking out loud against domestic violence, and is ready, willing, and able to help someone who needs help.

THIS CAMPAIGN IS AN ACTION CAMPAIGN. We want people to take action. Break the Silence action kits give starter ideas to help end domestic violence.

THIS CAMPAIGN IS AN ORGANIZING AND MEDIA CAMPAIGN. Mass media can help reach people, but by itself, cannot overcome the barriers created by cultural differences. Community organizing can create two-way channels of communication with individuals, groups, and organizations. We want to listen and respond appropriately in order to reach everyone with a better message.

THIS CAMPAIGN IS RELATIONSHIP-BASED. The whole premise of this campaign is to give everyone a role and a responsibility in ending domestic violence. This campaign is about meeting with people, listening to them, eliciting their ideas, and sharing some of ours. It is all about follow-up, and supporting individuals as they move from inaction to action.

Small steps can create safety and begin to stop the violence cycle. Call for a Yolo County Break the Silence kit and/or a presentation for your group, organization, or place of employment.
